Types of Orthodontic Appliances
In addition to brackets and aligners, specialized orthopedic appliances are sometimes used to guide bone growth and coordinate dental arches:
⚙️ Rapid Palatal Expanders (RPE)
The palatal expander "expands" (widens) your upper jaw by putting gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. When the desired expansion is achieved, you will wear the appliance for several months to solidify the bone and prevent relapse.
Widening the upper jaw resolves crossbites, creates natural space for crowded permanent teeth, and dramatically improves nasal airway flow in children.
👶 Habit & Myofunctional Appliances
Appliance therapy (such as thumb guards or tongue cribs) prevents negative dental changes caused by thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, helping children develop a balanced bite naturally.
